creates personalized, holistic, and contextual architectural projects—projects where distinctive design and detailing are integral elements from the very first sketches. Space, material, and detail do not stand on their own; instead, they form an integrated whole—in dialogue with both the site and the user.
working in collaboration with the client
By employing sensitive and communicative design methods—such as hand sketching—the unique nature of the project is slowly discovered in collaboration with the client. During design sessions with the architect, the future users gain insight into their own programmatic and functional needs and desires. This interaction, combined with the architect’s expertises, plays a pivotal role in creating high-quality architecture, characterized by both aesthetics and a human touch.
a natural design development
The characteristics of the project's location, the solar orientation, and light itself are harnessed to shape both the interior and exterior. These natural design tools help create a surprising sense of spaciousness and form the foundation of a sustainable building. Sightlines—both within the building and towards the surroundings—are also essential in defining forms, which are further enhanced by distinctive lighting effects and carefully selected materials. Carefully positioned and oriented openings, along with framed views that hang in the space like paintings, connect interior areas with elements of the outside world.
Ana Rocha graduated from Delft University of Technology (NL) and the University of Porto (PT). She has been working as an architect since 1997. In 2006, she co-founded Rocha Tombal Architecten in Amsterdam with colleague Michel Tombal, having previously gained extensive experience at firms such as Mecanoo Architecten.
Since 2013, Ana Rocha has been practicing in The Hague under the name ANAROCHA architecture. She is a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft (Chair of Architecture and Dwelling) and frequently lectures at Dutch or foreign Academies of Architecture. Ana Rocha regularly sits on advisory panels and juries in the Netherlands and abroad.
